How do you calculate 3x the rent?

Multiply the monthly rent by 3. The result is the gross monthly income a landlord wants to see. Rent of $1,200 needs $3,600 a month, $1,500 needs $4,500, and $2,000 needs $6,000. For the yearly salary, multiply the rent by 36 instead: $1,500 rent takes $54,000 a year.

To go the other way and find the highest rent your pay supports, divide your gross monthly income by 3. A $60,000 salary is $5,000 a month, which qualifies for rent up to $1,666.

Paid by the hour? Multiply your wage by your weekly hours, then by 52, and divide by 12 to get the monthly figure first. The 3 times the rent chart lists the answer for every rent from $500 to $5,000.
