What if I don't make 3 times the rent?
You still have options. The most common is a co-signer or guarantor, someone with enough income who agrees to pay if you cannot. Landlords also accept a larger security deposit where the state allows it, a roommate added to the lease, or bank statements showing savings equal to several months of rent.
Count every source of income before you decide you fall short. Side work, benefits, child support and a signed offer letter for a new job usually count when you can document them.
If none of that closes the gap, look for properties with a lower bar. Some screen at 2.5 times the rent or 2 times the rent, and private owners are often more flexible than large complexes.
